JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Our Favorite Vendors

  • Seasonal Cake and Dessert Ideas:
  • Cocktail Cakes: European-Style Tortes made with thin layers of sponge cake infused with a light syrup and a touch of liqueur. They remind us of our favorite cocktails! Our favorites: Mudslide, Lemoncello, and Laura's Freshman Year.
  • Try a Dessert Buffet of our mini pastries: chocolate mousse cups, fruit tarts, eclairs, and cream puffs.

Welcome to our little blog! "The Queen Sez..." discusses cake trends and ideas; and Terri's royal opinion! Today we will cover the topic of CUPCAKES FOR YOUR WEDDING.

They sure look cute in the bridal magazines don't they? All fancied up with pearls and such; set up on stands to present them in a tiered arrangement. The Cupcake: that little single serving just-for-you appeal has made its way to the wedding reception table. Sounds kinda fun, maybe a good way to get around that "cutting fee" for a tiered cake.
But please, before you place the order, consider the impression you are making on your guests. If your reception is informal, perhaps a barbeque style or picnic at the park, cupcakes may be just the right dessert. However, if your guests have come dressed up for the evening, dined on a wonderful meal in elegant surroundings, do you really want them to peel off that cupcake paper with their fingers and eat their "wedding cake" with their hands? There is not too much you can do to a regular cupcake to bring it above the "grocery-store" look while keeping the "grocery-store" price.
When budgeting for your wedding cake, stop in to see us. We can help you economize with sheetcake servings while still creating a beautiful, delicious impression. The cake is important! It's the last thing your guests eat, you want it to be perfect.
...the Queen has spoken.

New Year's 2008 Letter to our Queen of Cakes Staff:

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE!

2007 was a great year for Queen of Cakes! Let's look back at our 4th year in business!

We did a lot of 'high-profile' work last year, projects that helped promote our great cakes and unique style of decorating. Remember the crazy KDWB Radio event last March? We had the opportunity to participate in the station's 'Dig for the Diamond' promotion. KDWB was hoping to get a few 8" cakes for prospective brides to dig into as they searched for a $5000.00 diamond ring. But that was just too small scale for us! We created 5 gorgeous tiered cakes that were the hit of the event and helped promote our wedding cakes.

April '07 brought us our 'most-servings-ever' order for the MN Orchestra Pops Concerts. Doc Severinson celebrated his final concerts with the Orchestra and we came through with 4000 servings of cake and a tiered display cake to honor the famous horn player.

1500 cupcakes, each with a tropical flower piped in buttercream helped usher in May 2007, and the start of Wedding Cake Season '07. We designed, created, and delivered approximately 368 tiered wedding cakes, ranging from 2-7 tiers and enjoyed by brides and grooms and their guests as far away as St. Cloud to the North, Scandia to the East, Willmar to the West and Northfield to the South. And the tally does not even include the dozens of tiered and elaborate birthday and occasion cakes we did.

Our Butler Square Anniversary Project was a fun bonding experience for us all, and once again showcased our store and style with a large cake presence and the fun and whimsy of modeling chocolate.

Our store was featured in Midwest baking magazine, Minnesota Bride, and we were voted one of the 'BEST OF' by brides on the Knot.

Through the hard work and dedication of everyone here, we continue to be blessed with the opportunity to donate cakes for the kids at St. Joseph's Home and the Shelters at Cornerstone. We can look at these orders as a chance to share our God-given talents with those less fortunate.

There is no growth without change, and we really did prove that in 2007. In May it was exciting and a little scary to implement changes to our wedding cake team. Brynn and Emma have pulled the yoke in that area with great success. Bethany arrived with her sweet smile and efficient handling of Brides and their orders. Thank Goodness she brought us Taylor, who has absolutely surpassed any baker to ever cross our threshold (and without a timer!). Alyssa is well on her way to cake decorating superstardom, and Jenny continues to grow and amaze us with her passion for cakes and decorating. Patty has the impossible task of keeping me on track, as well as our accounts receivable, inventory, customer service, orders, and whatever else crosses her path on any given day.
Change is sometimes painful, and we learned that too in 2007. We miss Rachel and Melanie, and I will always be grateful to Rachel for helping this store grow. It was quite a journey watching Miyan move from dish boy to baker, but he did it! We had the experience of meeting several new co-workers, some of whom moved on to other interests or situations that were a better fit for them. We had many accomplishments to be proud of, and some others to learn from: our first wedding cake to go 'horizontal', how many new levels of customer service we can reach (is this a test??), and that things are not always what they seem.

Do customers ever ask you: 'Are you the Queen of Cakes?' You need to remember that, indeed you ARE what makes this store what it is today. Four years ago this store was only an idea in the mind of one woman with a dream. It did not exist in any way, shape or form outside my head. It is only through YOUR hands, YOUR kind words to a customer, YOUR going the extra mile that Queen of Cakes has touched thousands of people and will continue to be part of the special events in the lives of our customers. Let your Light shine through in 2008!
Love, Terri
